Stop Smoking and Reach Your Ideal Weight

One of the biggest problems when trying to stop smoking is weight gain. Smoking is bad for you, but so is being overweight. How can you give up cigarettes and stay slim?

If you've tried everything, don't give up - it is possible! Everyone is individual and so what worked for your friend or relative won't necessarily work for you. The trick is to find methods which suit your lifestyle and preferences.

First of all, let's take a look at why we gain weight when we stop smoking.

When a smoker takes the first puff of a cigarette, the liver releases sugar into the bloodstream. This is why a smoker who is hungry will often have a cigarette instead of something to eat. So, once you stop smoking, you start to miss that burst of sugar and instead, reach for a replacement. This is usually in the form of sweets, biscuits or cake and if you allow this to become a habit, you will gain weight.

It is possible to avoid this, but first stop and think about why you want to give up smoking, and why you want to either maintain your present weight, or get rid of the excess pounds.

Each one of you will have personal reasons - you want to be able to run around with your children or grandchildren, to fit into a size 12 for your daughter's wedding, to be able to climb the stairs without getting out of breath or to have a bronchitis-free winter. What are your goals?

There are certainly some very compelling reasons to stop smoking and stay, or become, slim:

  • The increased likelihood of diseases associated with smoking, such as lung cancer, bladder and kidney cancer and emphysema.
  • Breathlessness and difficulty running, walking or climbing stairs.
  • Smell of cigarettes on clothes and breath.
  • Overweight, possibly leading to obesity and an increased likelihood of even more illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease.

However, if you look a little deeper, it's not just avoiding illness and smelling sweeter that you're after - you want to feel better. And why do you want to feel better? So that you can have a better quality of life. What you really want is to be able to enjoy your life in ways that are much more satisfying than the momentary buzz you get from a cigarette or a chocolate bar.
