Stay Safe Lose Weight

Dieting is fraught with danger - so how can you stay safe, lose weight, reach your ideal BMI and once you've reached your ideal weight, maintain that weight safely and for the rest of your life?

Step one is to avoid fad diets which encourage you to concentrate on eating one type of food, and at the same time often depriving yourself of foods that you actually need to keep your body healthy and functioning in the way it should.

Step two follows on from step one - make sure that you have all the nutrients that you need, that is a balanced diet which provides you with the vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids that you need, as well as a good balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat.

Step three is to talk to your doctor or other medical professional so that you are sure that your diet is safe. Even if you are sticking to the steps above, you need to make sure that you are taking in enough calories for your size, age and the type of lifestyle you lead.

Step four is to increase the amount of exercise you take, but be sure to go easy to start with. Sudden and intense activity will do you more harm than good and although you should become a little more active, it isn't necessary to start a strenuous exercise program. If you want to make a significant increase in your exercise routine, talk to your doctor so that you know how to do this safely. It's very discouraging if you start off on a new exercise routine only to hurt yourself early on and be unable to do any exercise at all for months.
