The nicotine in cigarettes is an addictive substance, which has an effect on the brain, causing you to crave more of it. And giving it up causes some pretty unpleasant side effects, which you probably know all about, if you've tried to stop before, for example irritability, depression and increased appetite which can lead to weight gain. Nicotine is both psychologically and physically addictive and so both your body and your mind crave it. Unfortunately, its effects only last for about an hour or two and then you need another hit.
